Front OEM "A" Bar Upper Cover Arch for NewDefender
If your vehicle is equipped with a front original plastic "A" frame and a Warn winch, we offer you a solution in the form of strengthening the upper side of the "A" frame with a brace that is directly bolted to the inner tube frame (the tube frame is located under the plastic "A" frame ). Unfortunately, the original design, as designed by the manufacturer, is imperfect, unstable and does not form a compact unit with the front part of the vehicle.
The plastic "A" frame is attached in the upper part only with Velcro and in the lower part with only two self-tapping screws. This solution is completely inadequate, and when driving off-road, there is a risk that you will immediately lose the "A" plate part of the frame on the first pothole, run over and destroy the car. However, you are not sure of the fastening even when driving on the road, especially on the highway at high speeds, when there is a risk of it being detached from the car due to aerodynamic resistance. We can easily imagine what may follow...
It is also necessary to draw attention to the fact that Velcro gradually wears out and loses its strength over time. It is notable for the types of zippers chosen by the manufacturer for this application - a zipper with hard hooks, which initially guarantees a relatively firm fixation, but loses this property over time.
Therefore, we offer you a solution in the form of an aluminum cover arch that is screwed through the plastic cover "A" of the frame directly into the original sheet metal holders that are welded to the tubular inner frame.
Fastening is done using countersunk head screws, cone washers and rivet nuts.
Installation is simple. You place the cover arch on the upper plastic part of the "A" bar exactly from edge to edge and in such a way that the back edge of the arch aligns symmetrically with the back of the plastic "A" frame. In this position, fix the cover arch to the plastic with adhesive tape. Then fix the whole thing to the inner tubular frame using the original Velcro fasteners. Now mark the holes. If you are more skilled, you can drill through the cover arch, if you don't dare, peel off the adhesive tape and remove the cover arch. Drill holes with a diameter of 6.5 mm directly into the plastic and then into the metal holders. After making the holes, bend the plastic "A" bar away (peel off the Velcro). Insert, for example, a wooden board (or other suitable spacer) between the plastic and the tubular frame. Now you can drill holes with a diameter of 9.5 mm (enlarge the existing holes with a diameter of 6.5 mm) in the sheet metal holders of the tubular frame. Subsequently, deburr all the holes made, remove dirt from drilling in the surroundings, e.g. with compressed air or a vacuum cleaner. Now insert the rivet nuts into the holes dia. 9.5 mm and use riveting pliers to remove the rivet. Remove the spacer inserted between the plastic and tubular frame. Fasten the plastic to the tubular frame using the original Velcro fasteners. Put on the cover arch and screw everything in with countersunk screws. Don't forget to place cone washers under the screws. This completes the assembly.
